Part Racing

The idea of Part Racing emerged as our team wanted to tackle revolutionizing traditional Mario Kart-style racing. After seeking opinions of gamers and based on our own personal experiences, we felt that the addictiveness and fun of Mario Kart was not because you raced other opponents on time but you could use objects along the game (e.g. lightning bolt) to beat your opponents.

With Part Racing, we designed the game around this more combative game nature where players actively interact with the environment and collect "parts" along the race track. The player not only can use the "parts" collected in different combinations but also can use the mouse to directly pick up objects in the environment to hit an opponent.

Implementation

We used the Havoc engine in Macromedia director to implement the physics of the game. In addition, we offered two modes of playing: 1) normal mode featuring keyboard and mouse controls and 2) advanced mode featuring voice and keyboard controls.
